Bike PathThis is one of the typical two way bike paths in Nijmegen, going past some buildings from Radboud Universiteit. |
![]() |
Max Planck InstituteThe entrance to my new work place (which in November 2010 was only an internship place for me). |
![]() |
Institute in WinterHere, in the beginning of December, I was still pleased with the snow. But later, back in Dortmund, when all trafic, especially with bicycles, was severely limited for several weeks, I sure had enough of it. |
![]() |
Bicycle ParkingThis is the parking deck for bicycles at Nijmegen Station. Actually I don't stand at the end of the hallway, but in the middle - and there are two or three more of them... in addition to the parking area on the surface, which is about the size of a big football field. |

RRXWill the Rhein Ruhr Express remain a dream, like the “Metrorapid”, or will a fast connection between Cologne (on the left with the Dome) and Dortmund (on the right with the television tower) one day become reality? This poster was in a conventional express train (somewhere between Venlo, Netherlands, and Dortmund). |

VoorstadslaanI now live in one of these pretty houses. |
![]() |
UnderpassFrom the city centre to the “Voorstad” (outskirts)... |
![]() |
Escalator instructionsHere it's not illegal (like in Dortmund), to use your bike on the escalator (roltrappen), but they even explain to you how to do it properly! |

SpoorbrugNijmegen's railway bridge with adjacent bike lane and restored towers. |

WaterThe familiar Rhine is called Waal in Nijmegen, after the Nederrijn’s splitting-off from it (near Millingen). This picture is taken from the Spoorbrug. In it you see Nijmegen and the Waalbrug. |
![]() |
High WaterMy flatmates told me the water level had already decreased, but it was still quite high on this day. |
![]() |
Railway BridgeHere the “Snelbinder”, added to the 1983 bridge in 2004, is well visible. |
![]() |
SnelbinderA fantastic bike path - and riding here is much nicer than using the bike lane on the other Waal bridge, with all the stinking cars and trucks. |
![]() |
ShipNote a very special picture, for there is usually a lot of traffic on this river. |

Harbour and Power PlantWhat the television tower was for me in Dortmund is this power plant’s smoke here in Nijmegen: the first thing I see from a distance, when I return home. |
![]() |
Living by the WaterThese houses are in about five minutes walking distance from my place. |
![]() |
Te koopThere are quite a few nice houses for sale in Nijmegen. |
![]() |
Bank in the FogSeveral times it was foggy until about noon. |
![]() |
WaalbrugThis 1930s bridge is a bottleneck for cars - whereas buses are never delayed, because they got a lane on their own. |
![]() |
Waal WaterlevelSome lines of text from this board (because it”s not well readable in this online version):Hoogst bekende waterstand, januari 1926: NAP + 13,64 m“NAP” is the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum. |
![]() |
Huize HeijendaalThis building also has it’s own Wikipedia article (Netherlands). |
![]() |
RabobankA bank like a castle... which probably is to inspire trust - futile with me, of course. |
![]() |
Grazing on the BanksA pleasure for those who like horses. |
![]() |
Spoorbrug IIWhile the Snelbinder was deserted in the previous picture it is bustling here (and this shows that the red paths are not merely bike paths, but may also be used by “bromfiets”). |
![]() |
Waalbrug IIBridges can be so beautiful. |
![]() |
Nieuwe BrugA new bridge is to be build here until 2013. Noteworthy detail: although the bridge is to be named after the American’s crossing of the Waal (oversteek), to commemorate the liberation from German occupation in WW2, both cars recognisable in the model on this board are German types (Mercedes and Audi)... |

Industry and BeachHere both Waal banks are (still) very different. But I’m afraid the new bridge will lead to more developments on the right Waal bank. |

I♥NYmegenThe window on the left also showcases the corresponding t-shirts. |

Lonely little houseRound this house there are only meadows, water, and a path that is not open to cars. |
![]() |
PeacockA rare and pretty sight by the road. |
![]() |
Idyllic VillageThis picture is taken from the dyke, but obviously not at the best time of the day (with the midday sun being too “hard”). |
![]() |
Horses IIDepending on your monitor (and eyes) you may still be able to see the power plant’s smoke ascending to the right of the church tower (on the other side of the Waal). |
![]() |
Garbage CatcherA funny construction, which tempts to throw rubbish into it whilst still riding on the bike. |
![]() |
Nymweger StraßeThe street from Kranenburg, still in Germany, just 10 kilometers from Nijmegen. |
![]() |
KronenburgerparkThe Kronenburger Park is located quite centrally, near the central station. |
![]() |
Villa LuxWith LUX and VillaLUX Nijmegen has got two excellent cinemas. Buildings of this style dominate Nijmegen's cityscape. |
![]() |
Waal BeachOn this side of the river there is almost always a free bench available - a nice place for contemplation. |
![]() |
St. AnnastraatNote the post ad: morgen is vandaag (“tomorrow is today”) - my experience is somewhat different... |
![]() |
De Nieuwe WinkelThe Lange Hezelstraat with many cosy little shops. |
![]() |
VierdaagseDuring the annual Four Day Marches (Vierdaagse) the city stands upside down: everywhere there are celebrations and the population is outnumbered several times by visitors. |
![]() |
Via GladiolaSt. Annastraat, here passing my work place, is turned into Via Gladiola during the Vierdaagse. The “survivors” of the marches are received with Gladiolus, like Roman gladiators. |
![]() |
Traffic PoliceAn impressive performance on the last day of the marches, when directing motorised traffic and marchers on this junction: it's hard for me to imagine German police acting so laid-back and self-ironic. |

UtrechtThis is not Nijmegen, but by NS it is only an hour away. |

Fog in WinterIn winter there is more fog in Nijmegen, compared to Dortmund - probably because it is more rural. This construction site is near the central station, where new student apartments are being build. |
![]() |
De GelderlanderOn my way to work I now have a better view of the Wal... until a new building will soon block it again. |
![]() |
Skating rinkAfter the high water's decline this remaining pond froze. |

Plein 1944A big construction site at the centre of Nijmegen... where a two bedroom apartment is going to cost €160,000. |

Auto-Handel KleyngeldQuite an impressive “company nameplate”. |
![]() |
FietsroutenetwerkThe cycling network with its nodes (here Zweefvliegveld, the glider airfield near Malden), which always offer such maps of the environment, are a tremendous help when going on a spontaneous ride! |

MaldenIn April 2012 I moved house again, after just one year. Malden with its train station Mook-Molenhoek is already two stops closer to Dortmund than Nijmegen. |
![]() |
Morning fog |
![]() |
Morning sunThis is the path behind the house in which I lived in 2012. The previous picture was also taken here. It was indeed idyllic in Malden. |
